``The diagram ... was drawn by Dr. Robert M. Metcalfe in 1976 to present Ethernet ... to the National Computer Conference in June of that year. On the drawing are the original terms for describing Ethernet. Since then other terms have come into usage among Ethernet enthusiasts.''

There is an ACM paper, written by two of the inventors, that describes the experimental Ethernet system shown in this drawing. The paper was published in the Communications of the ACM, Volume 19, Issue 7, (July 1976) with the title : "Ethernet: distributed packet switching for local computer networks" by Metcalfe and Boggs
