Quick Reference Guide to 10-Mbps Media System

2.2 Components Used in the 10-Mbps Media System

Shown next is a block diagram of the components that can be used to make a connection to the 10-Mbps media system.

FIGURE 2.2 Block diagram of a 10-Mbps network connection

The figure shows the components defined in the IEEE standard for making an attachment to a 10-Mbps media system. While this set of entities and their three-letter identifiers might seem like more alphabet soup of interest to network engineers only, these identifiers describe real-world devices that you need to know about. We use the three-letter acronyms from the standard since you will find them used in vendor literature and printed on Ethernet devices.

- Physical Medium
- Medium Dependent Interface
- Medium Attachment Unit
- Attachment Unit Interface
- Data Terminal Equipment, or Computer
